Blake Kuwahara BK 1036 Taupe Sun
Bold Square Geometry with Prismatic Taupe Lamination
The BK 1036 is a high-impact square frame that utilizes light and transparency to soften its aggressive silhouette. In the Taupe Sun colorway, the earthy, neutral pigments interact with the sun to create a multi-dimensional "halo" effect. Handcrafted in Japan, this frame represents over eight months of labor, from the initial lamination to the final hand-polishing.
Technical Craftsmanship & Materials
Proprietary Dual-Layer Lamination: The inner taupe silhouette and the translucent outer frame are milled as separate units. They undergo a proprietary eight-month production cycle, including two months of high-pressure lamination and six months of curing to ensure a permanent, monolithic bond.
Premium Japanese Acetate: Hand-sculpted from high-crystalline cellulose acetate, which provides superior transparency for the outer shell and deep color saturation for the inner taupe core.
45-Degree Mitered Joinery: Borrowing from fine furniture assembly, the temples meet the front at a precise 45-degree mitered joint. This technical detail hides the break in the material, allowing the taupe pattern to flow uninterrupted from the face into the arms.
Custom German OBE Hinges: Equipped with reinforced OBE multi-barrel hinges featuring nylon-coated stainless steel screws to maintain long-term tension and prevent the temples from loosening.
Fit & Ergonomics
Integrated High-Pad Bridge: Features Blake Kuwahara’s custom 11mm integrated acetate nose pads (4mm taller than the industry standard). This additional height provides better "lift" and surface area for a more universal and secure fit.
Weighted Ballast Temple Tips: The temple tips are reinforced with an additional 1.0mm of crystal acetate. This acts as a functional counterweight, shifting the center of gravity back toward the ears to prevent the front-heavy frame from sliding down the nose.
Hand-Finished Luster: Every frame undergoes a complex series of tumbling with wood chips and pumice stones, followed by hand-buffing to ensure every architectural edge is tactilely smooth.
Technical Dimensions
Model: BK 1036 (Proctora)
Lens Width: 51mm
Bridge Width: 22mm
Temple Length: 150mm
Shape: Bold Square
Manufacturing: Handcrafted in Japan
Expert Note
Expert Note: The BK 1036 is an exceptional choice for those with medium to large face shapes who want the look of a "thick" frame without the excessive weight. Because the outer frame is translucent taupe, it provides a strong horizontal brow line without being as visually overwhelming as a solid black frame. Additionally, the 150mm temple length makes this one of the better options in the collection for those who require a bit more length to secure the frame comfortably behind the ear.
